What is the art scene like in Tupelo, MS? You might not think that a city commonly associated with music, auto shows and parks has a thriving arts scene, but you would be mistaken! This is, after all, the city that gave us Elvis Presley, a creative genius of music! What are some of the artsy and crafty attractions in Tupelo?
Let’s start by considering the Gumtree Museum Of Art. This museum was started in 1982 and has consistently presented a high standard of visual art among its members and the Tupelo public. The museum offers workshops, lectures and a variety of activities. The museum has a Greco-Roman architectural style as well as a limestone interior. It is found on Main Street near the downtown area. Some of the museum’s future exhibits include Summer Art Camp, a Mississippi Painters Society and a Vogel Collection: 50 Works for 50 States.
The Cultural Alliance of Tupelo is another organization that advances the art. The CATLC actually encompasses 21 member organizations across Lee County. Some of the projects that have been displayed over at 1800 W. Main St. (the site of the main auditorium) include the American Wind Symphony and a Celebration of Cultures. Some of these sites affiliated with CATLC include the Brice's Crossroads National Battlefield site, the Elvis Presley Festival, the Fortnightly Musicale and the North Mississippi Dance Center.
There are also a wide variety of entertainment shows and shopping areas around the vicinity. The Tupelo Flea Market offers plenty of local arts and crafts. The Lyric Theatre on North Broadway Street features live performances by a theatrically trained cast. The Tupelo Automobile Museum is a unique form of Tupelo art, as it features classic cars of the past. You also have to remember the many annual festivals of Tupelo, which tend to appear in the spring season all throughout the year. The Tupelo Elvis Festival in June gets a great deal of traffic as does the Annual Honey Festival and the Tupelo Film Festival. The film festival is held in the May season, and the organization is currently in its 7th year. This is a two-day festival offering film screenings, forums and networking opportunities.
Tupelo offers a variety of arts and crafts. Whether you are watching a performance live, or are admiring a new exhibit, or are buying an item from the local flea market, it’s easy to see this city booming with creativity!
